ROTARACT FOR AIDS

On 1st December, 2009, 16(sixteen) Rotaract clubs came together to mark “WORLD AIDS DAY” by organizing a cycle rally and public gathering at Budge budge from 10:30am. To publicize the event Rotaractors made banners, the red ribbons, flags and posters with the AIDS symbol. An auto bearing our banner went on announcing our program from 7:00am in the morning along the budge budge trunk road and nearby localities.
The total program was segregated into two halves; first half was the “PUBLIC GATHERING” which took place in Bata More from 10:30am onwards. The “RED RIBBON” was given to all the Rotaractors, Guests, Rotarians, Speakers and everyone present. The gathering was addressed by local personalities and guest speakers, who spoke about AIDS and its prevention. Our Chief speaker was Ms Sunetra Chowdhury, AIDS Councilor, West Bengal State AIDS Prevention and Control Society and Chief Guest was Mr. Debashis Banerjee, Inspector-in-charge of Maheshtala Police Station. Among other speakers was Mr. Satabrata Dey, Zila Secretary, Paschim Bangla Bihgyan Mancha, Mr.Sujoy Das, Secretary, Maheshtala Thana Utsav Samanay Samity and Mr. Amalesh Sarkar, councilor, Ward No:32 Mehemanpur, Maheshtala Municipality. A big ambulance was decorated with the event banner which was brought by the Behala Rotaractors. Rotaractors who were present pinned all the ongoing general people with the “RED RIBBON” and also distributed leaflets containing the information about HIV and AIDS. The public gathering was sum up by giving a vote of thanks to all the speakers and guests present, which was followed by distribution of food packets.
The second half comprised of the “CYCLE RALLY”, which took place from Plaster More, near Maheshtala Municipality from 12:00noon. The rally was flagged off by Mr. Debashis Banerjee, Inspector-in-charge of Maheshtala Police Station in the presence of Maheshtala Municipality Councilor Mr. Amalesh Sarkar. The rally was escorted by an auto bearing our banner and announcing the cause and significance of the rally from the front, the cyclists were in the centre which was followed by a car and few bikes. The rally comprised of more than 30 participants, who rode the cycles from Plaster more to Bata more. The path of the rally was a 4 km approx stretch. The whole rally was supervised by the Maheshtala Police Station. The rally disbursed at 1:30pm and food packets were distributed to all the participants. This was an initiative by different rotaract clubs who intend to make the society a better place to live it by showcasing the importance and educating and causing awareness about HIV & AIDS. Unite we stand to fight the disease and prevent our society from HIV & AIDS through “ROTARACT FOR AIDS”. The event was attended by DS Rtr Vishal Pandey and Rtn Indu Bhusan Das, President (elect), Rotary club of Behala.
The whole event was initiated by ROTARACT CLUBS OF Behala, Budge Budge, Calcutta, Calcutta Dhakuria, Calcutta Lansdowne, Calcutta Metropolitan, Calcutta Midtown, Calcutta South City, Calcutta South Suburban, Calcutta South West, Calcutta Victoria, Heritage Institute of Technology, Joka, Kalighat, North Calcutta and Sodepur and was ably supported by Rotary Club of Behala and Inner Wheel Club of Behala, in association with Maheshtala Thana Utsav Sammanaye Samiti, Maheshtala Municipality, Maheshtala Police Station, Paschim Bangla Bigyan Mancha, Kolkata Oxygen-G Society and Indi profit Newspaper. The event was covered by Maheshtala Cable Network, Akash Bangla, E-TV Bangla and ATN Bangla
